Where the North Begins

Geographically situated in south central Wisconsin between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, Portage is a thriving city with a rich historical past and lots of northwoods recreational opportunities. In Portage you'll find several historical sites including the restored Indian Agency House and Surgeon's Quarters, Society Hill with homes dating back to the 1870's and a historical downtown retail district. Portage today also features a bustling business climate, great shopping, and a wonderful Performing Arts Center for theatrical productions, art exhibits and concerts. Portage is Wisconsin's third oldest settlement, and celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2004.

Business and Industry

Ideally located near major commerce and tourist centers in central Wisconsin, Portage boasts a strong business climate and continues to be attractive to new business and industry. Portage has a diverse economic base including manufacturing and industry, retail, service, government and agriculture. Major manufacturers are Associated Milk Producers, Penda Corporation, Rayovac Corporation, Tri-Enda Corporation and Cardinal FG. In addition to a thriving downtown retail district, two new shopping centers and expanded industrial parks have brought additional economic strength to the community.

Recreational Activities

In Portage, there are lots of outdoor activities to be enjoyed throughout the year by every member of the family. Winter recreation includes downhill skiing at Cascade Mountain, one of Wisconsin's top ski resorts, snowmobiling, ice fishing, curling, sledding and ice skating. During the warmer months, water enthusiasts enjoy the many lakes and rivers for fishing, boating and swimming. The Wisconsin River is known to anglers for its sturgeon, panfish, bass, northern, walleye and muskie. The walking/biking trail along the Wisconsin River Levee and the Ice Age Trail are great ways to enjoy the area's scenery. In addition, the MacKenzie Center offers 280 acres of nature-based experiences, including hiking themed nature trails, museums, and outdoor exhibits. Several restored prairie and native plant nurseries are spectacular during the spring and summer months. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy two area golf courses, and all ages will appreciate the recreational activities offered in the area's parks.  

Portage celebrates its heritage and community  spirit with many community events including Canal Days, Concert in the Park  & Fine Arts Fair, PumpkinFest and many more. Concerts, local theater and art exhibits also enhance the quality of life for both visitors and residents.

Shopping, Restaurants & Hotels

You are sure to enjoy shopping, dining and lodging in Portage. Shopping in Downtown Historic Portage is a fun experience. Many of the buildings have been preserved in their original Victorian architecture, providing a colorful background for the busy retail area of today. The Downtown Retail District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Specialty stores include women's fashion and accessories, gifts, art, quilting and craft supplies and much more. A full-range of dining choices will satisfy the hungriest, from steakhouses and supper clubs with entertainment to family restaurants and casual grills. In Portage, you're sure to find accommodations to meet your needs. There are  quaint bed and breakfast inns, hotels, motels, and  several campgrounds and cottages as well as places designed for extended visits.
